Who We Are

Occidental Underwriters of Hawaii was established in 1933 by a pioneering young businessman, the late Lawrence Takeo Kagawa. He started the company as the Security Insurance Agency, representing the Occidental Life Insurance Company of California, and worked out of a small office in the Dillingham Transportation Building in downtown Honolulu with a staff of three people. The name of the company was changed in 1954 to Occidental Underwriters of Hawaii. The Occidental staff has grown from three people to more than 30 and Occidental Underwriters has long since had its own building, which has become something of a local landmark, at the corner of Beretania and Piikoi Streets.

We have sought to provide the people of Hawaii with the very best insurance and financial services that we could possibly offer. That is still what we do, and we continually strive for better ways to do it. That Occidental Underwriters is a family company is only part of the reason we call it the Occidental Ohana. It is not hard to find Occidental agents, and members of our staff, who have been with the company for almost its entire life, and we have policyholders who have been with us from the first year we opened our doors.

When their children grew up and started their own families, they too became Occidental policyholders. We are very proud of that, for it says we have earned the trust of the people we serve. For more than half a century, the people of Hawaii have supported our company with their business, their friendship and their loyalty. They’ve made us one of the largest volume producers in Hawaii year after year. We are grateful for that confidence and support, and we thank our tens of thousands of policyholders whom we are privileged to serve. We pledge ourselves to continue serving Hawaii in the finest tradition of this venerable and highly respected company.
